Women In Business Leadership

Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy is a market leader in dealing with the issues surrounding women in business and has been involved in pioneering work on the subject.

Over the last 3.5 years we have coached over 486 executive women both in relation to non executive and executive positions on Boards and also to help them achieve their executive aspirations and to play at the top of their game, with confidence, in an authentic way.

We (Leadership Stage India) work with senior women in our one-to-one coaching, supporting their development and helping them to build the conviction to put themselves forward for roles that reflect their full potential. We are proud to observe many of the women we have coached achieving their objectives – whether they are promotion, a seat on the board or a new direction. Some of our learning in this area is captured in two of the most authoritative books on the subject –A Woman’s Place is in the Boardroom: the Leadership Stage Road-map and A Woman’s Place is in the World Wide Boardroom .

We are equally proud of the work we do with companies, advising them on what they need to do to be able to attract, retain and develop talented women. We offer programmes in this field on a customised basis. We recognise that selecting the right approaches to improving companies capacity to hire, develop, retain and promote talented women is not easy. A programme that suits the culture and mores of one organisation might well founder in another. As well as requiring ‘buy in’ from the very top, anything that is launched to improve companies’ performance in this area must reflect the values of each organisation.

At Leadership Stage we are committed to offering services and programmes that are genuinely customised for each organisation, and coaching interventions that address the needs of each individual woman. We co-create programmes in partnership with the Board, senior management and relevant HR professionals, believing that this is the only way to achieve long term success.

Working with Executive Women
Large numbers of women still struggle to identify the critical success factors that will enable them to achieve a Board appointment or otherwise advance their career. Those factors that relate to their own professional and personal development very often emerge as issues of motivation, self-belief and a capacity to both articulate and evidence the impact of their own authentic leadership style.

Our Leadership Stage Perspective
We help women clients address these issues by drawing not only on the findings of our leadership stage research but also on our many years of coaching. Over the last 15+ years in Leadership Stage we have coached close to a two thousand aspiring and successful women leaders, and have distilled from this work a number of crucial areas in which we work with these senior women clients, helping them avoid derailment and build sound, successful careers that equip them for the most senior roles. We address:

Personal style and impact

• Developing confidence and poise: helping a woman with potential become more aware of her strengths and manage her profile
• Expanding influence and impact: helping women develop greater presence and authority, and deploy a wide range of influencing skills
• Developing leadership presence: helping women bring out their authenticity as a leader.

Organisational Relationships

• Working with the dynamics of the Board: broadening the client’s perspective of how decisions get made at top management levels
• Networking and building alliances: advising women on the strategies necessary to build essential informal networks and alliances.

Managing career and roles

• Managing your career: raising the client’s sights as to what is achievable; helping her to plan, handle competition, balance work and personal commitments, learn from setbacks and build resilience and determination
• Transitioning into a high profile role: helping women handle the visibility and multiple pressures of a senior
leadership position.

We have also noted that women often struggle with their image, how to hold their authority and be themselves. This is reflected in the clothes they wear. Our Director Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy, who can help clients paint a more considered picture of themselves and increase their impact through the clothes they wear.

Working with Organisations

Building a Receptive Culture for Women’s Development

Chairman and Chief Executives have been lamenting the lack of female candidates for Board positions for over 15+ years, but remarkably little progress has been made. Although following the Thiyagarajakumar Ramaswamy's Research Report many organisations are seeking to address this, the strategic pipeline of women remains an area of significant concern. By focusing on helping organisations develop the organisational context within which women can progress and advance – businesses can make tremendous progress in helping address the critical issues that are potentially holding women back.

Our Perspective

We help our clients address the organisational, cultural and attitudinal factors that influence the opportunities that are open to women. These can be deep-rooted, and may take time to both challenge and transform. Based on our experience and extensive research we therefore build a bespoke programme for each client organisation which can include one, or some, of the following:

• Supporting the business in creating and implementing a comprehensive ‘Leadership Stage Road-map’ for change and in measuring its business impact
• Facilitating workshops for the Board, senior team or operational heads to review the factors that might be affecting women’s success, and agreeing actions to address them
• Identifying explicit or implicit blockages to the progression of senior women
• Advising senior leaders on the skills and approaches needed to create a climate which encourages women to optimize their contribution to the business
• Enabling dialogues between top managers and high potential women to encourage open feedback
• Working with senior leaders and HR professionals to review current data and practice

What we offer
Each organisation is different, and success in this area, like any significant and sustainable cultural change, will depend on the strength of senior level sponsorship, the robustness of the company’s planning and execution and the cross-organisational partnership of all the key players. According to the specific needs of each organisation we provide support in two ways:

• Leadership Stage Specialist advice and consultancy: we work with your in-house professionals and senior leaders to understand your business’s challenges in progressing female talent and to help
you decide where to start and how to design your "Leadership Stage Road-map"
• Leadership Stage Board and senior team briefings and away-days: we facilitate discussions with your Board and senior leaders to air the issues, share insights, challenge assumptions and enable them to determine the direction they want to take
